

Influenced by the work of Beverly Gaventa (1999) 2 the main lens of this paper is a literary one. In this instance the focus is on the progress of the Mary of the gospels, who becomes the epitome of holiness, and how this process influenced different traditions of spirituality. Rather, it is born out of a fascination with the imaginative process that comes into play between the telling and writing of a narrative and the ongoing development of a character outside of the narrative. I am not assuming that this article presents something brand new and earth-shattering. Why Mary? Reams have been written on Mary from a multitude of angles and perspectives. Key words: Spirituality narrative criticism reception history Mariology I will consider the phenomenon of characterisation in narratives, the blurring of lines in interpretation and how a character in a narrative, which is an artificial construct, is taken out of that context and placed in contexts determined, in a sense, by generations of 'new narrators' with changing understandings of holiness.
